OUTCOMES OF UNTREATED GESTATIONAL SYPHILIS: NURSING CARE

OBJECTIVE: describe the outcomes and nursing care regarding untreated gestational syphilis. METHOD: this is an Integrative Literature Review based on searches in the databases Virtual Library of Nursing (BDENF), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Online System for Search and Analysis of Medical Literature (MEDLINE), published in the last 5 years. Descriptors in Health Sciences (DECS) were used, intermediated by the Boolean operator AND being Nursing, Syphilis and Pregnancy. RESULTS: among the 12 articles found, 75% (9) were national and 25% (3) international, 1 from China, 1 from Italy and 1 from the United States. The results found mostly characterized as an outcome of untreated gestational syphilis, prenatal deficiency, non-treatment or incomplete treatment of the disease, reinfection, due to lack of condom use and non-adherence to the partner's treatment, social factors , economic, low education, vertical transmission, while nursing care is associated with a confirmed diagnosis of syphilis, health education and guidelines regarding the treatment and prevention of the disease. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: in addition to the risk of reinfection, there is the possibility of vertical transmission, resulting in congenital syphilis, bringing consequences to the fetus or newborn. The nurse was seen as one of the main service providers regarding the solution to improve care for pregnant women with syphilis. However, gaps in th.is assistance by the service provided were pointed out.
