Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of anxiety and depression and the factors that influence this indicator in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease followed up at a state health facility. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, and mixed-methods study was conducted with patients diagnosed with PD, with preserved communicative and cognitive abilities, who attended the neurology outpatient clinic of the Metropolitan Polyclinic of Belém do Pará between August and October 2025. The socioeconomic profile of the participants was determined using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, while the prevalence of anxiety and depression was assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The collected data underwent descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, adopting a p-value of 0.05 as the threshold for statistical significance. Results: The final study sample consisted of 19 patients. Among them, 1 presented symptoms suggestive of anxiety only, 2 presented symptoms suggestive of depression only, and 8 exhibited results suggestive of both anxiety and depression. Although not statistically significant in the tests applied, it was found that there were more patients with symptoms suggestive of depression and anxiety in the 65-year age group; in males; in the Black population; with other health dysfunctions; and in those with a family income of up to 1 minimum wage. Conclusion: Parkinson’s disease influences patients’ quality of life, especially in mental health parameters. Therefore, the creation of care protocols that integrate the assessment of anxiety and depression in the management of the disease is urgently needed, ensuring a better quality of life.
