Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a clinical condition of multiple origins, resulting from the inability of insulin to perform its function properly, either due to resistance to its action in the body or due to a deficiency of this hormone in the organism. This inability can lead to a state of permanent hyperglycemia and cause serious health consequences. The disease presents a differentiated pattern across the states in the northern region of Brazil due to social determinants of health, which impacts the prevalence of this comorbidity. Objective: To understand and highlight the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the states of the northern region of Brazil in 2024. Material and Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study through the analysis of secondary data, available from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System

(SUS) regarding the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the seven states of the northern region of the country in 2024. The results pertain to the number of cases per 10,000 inhabitants. Results: The observation and analysis conducted on the data from the northern states highlighted that Amapá is the state with the lowest prevalence of the disease, with approximately 51%, followed by Tocantins with 53.0%. Next are the states of Acre with 65.1%, Roraima with 66.8%, and Amazonas with approximately 71.4%. The states with the highest prevalence rates are Pará with 83.0% and Rondônia with 88.3%. These percentages, to some extent, reflect the perspective of Social Determinants of Health (SDH), where the interference of social factors such as limited access to quality healthcare services is evident. Conclusion: This study aimed to confirm and highlight the importance of investigating DM always in association with SDH, in order to provide improvements in the recommendation of screening, prevention, and management strategies. This is because some of these determinants, such as economic conditions, healthcare services, culture, sanitation, and education, affect the population in general, concerning the onset of chronic diseases, including Diabetes Mellitus.
