Abstract

Introduction: Bartholin's glands are responsible for vulvovaginal lubrication and can be affected by inflammatory and infectious processes1. The obstruction of its ducts can lead to the formation of cysts or abscesses, which, in recurrent cases or refractory to conservative treatments, may require surgical intervention2. Excision of Bartholin's gland is indicated in specific situations to prevent recurrences2. Objective: To analyze the number of Bartholin's gland excision procedures in the Northern region of Brazil from 2019 to 2024. Methods: This is a descriptive and qualitative study, whose data were obtained from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH-SUS), available in DATASUS. The number of hospitalizations due to Bartholin's gland excision procedure in the North region from 2019 to 2024 was evaluated, observing the variables year of processing, federation unit, and nature of care. Results: A total of 4,387 hospitalizations were recorded, of which 1,272 were elective and 3,109 were urgent. Among the states in the North region, Amazonas (1,906) and Pará (1,850) stand out – with the highest incidence – with a predominance of urgent cases, while the states of Roraima and Amapá had the lowest numbers, with 18 and 88 records, respectively. The temporal analysis revealed a heterogeneous pattern in the distribution of hospitalizations, registering the lowest number of cases in 2021 (557) and a peak in 2023 (863). Conclusion: The high number of urgent excisions suggests difficulties in accessing early gynecological care, which could reduce complications and the need for definitive intervention. Differences in procedure frequency between states may reflect socioeconomic disparities, impacting both access to health care and associated risk factors. These findings highlight the importance of public policies aimed at expanding access to gynecological consultations and the early management of Bartholin's gland disorders, contributing to the reduction of unnecessary surgical interventions.
