Abstract

Introduction: The increased prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among children and adolescents requires special attention, as this condition can significantly limit daily activities and autonomy of individuals, especially those undergoing hemodialysis replacement therapy who face a strict treatment routine, including restriction of water intake, which is crucial to avoid high interdialytic weight gain (IDWG). IDWG refers to the increase in weight between hemodialysis sessions due to fluid accumulation. This parameter is critical for hemodialysis management, as fluid overload can lead to serious complications. Objective: To report the experience of an educational activity with children, adolescents, and their caregivers in a hemodialysis room on IDWG control. Method: This is a qualitative and descriptive professional experience report carried out in a referral hospital in pediatric nephrology in the state of Pará through 12 consecutive meetings, where intervention was carried out by the multidisciplinary team through thematic question and answer dynamics, where health information was offered on the topics that permeate CKD, hemodialysis and IDWG, with encouragement to implement daily care in controlling water intake, reducing salt consumption and managing thirst. Result: The experience promoted interaction between the patient, caregiver and health professional triad by clarifying doubts on the subject and expanding knowledge, in addition to encouraging adherence to treatment in a playful and individualized way. Conclusion: In short, through this experience it was found that the importance of educational interventions was crucial to promote the control of interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), especially in the pediatric population, where there is a significant gap in research on the subject.
