Abstract

Purpose: A systematic review on lactose intolerance. Methods: The study used 20 articles published in PUBMED, LILLACS, SciELO and Google Scholar databases, which were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: 65% to 75% of the world population has IL, 45% of the studies described the Asian and African populations as having the highest prevalence. The most cited diagnostic tests were: expired hydrogen breath test (45%), glucose tolerance test (40%), jejunal / duodenal biopsy (20%), lactose intolerance management with exogenous lactase, cited in 30% of the articles studied. Conclusion: Lactose Intolerance is a growing pathology worldwide. The most common cause in adults is primary hypolactasia. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and abdominal distension were the most prevalent symptoms. The most commonly used diagnostic test is the expired hydrogen test, considered a gold standard by some authors. The most commonly used treatment is the reduction of lactose consumption
