Introduction: The wound healing process is prolonged, highlighting the need for the patient to perform basic care of their wound at home, with dressing changes or wound cleaning being of utmost importance to contribute to the healing of the affected area, minimizing the risk of infection and other complications (Coelho, 2021). Objective: To report the experience of nursing students in a health action on the correct technique for cleaning wounds in the home environment. Material and Methods: This is an experience report, carried out in 2024 by nursing students at a private university in Belém-PA. Initially consisting of a lecture with a banner, in which the classification of wounds and the relevance of self-care were addressed. Then, a simulator doll, gauze, and saline solution were used to demonstrate in practice the correct management. Results: The activity involved 23 guests, with the participation of some volunteers to understand the care in practice. Therefore, doubts were clarified and life stories of the participants were counted. Furthermore, it is important to highlight that the indication of certain types of dressings were discussed, as well as the appropriate and inappropriate practices when dealing with wounds to avoid possible complications, such as wound dehiscence, infections and even the need for hospitalization, thus contributing to harm reduction. Conclusion: It is important to note the relevance of implementing educational actions aimed at wound hygiene at home, since many of the participants were unaware of the subject. The important role of nurses in promoting these initiatives for the community is highlighted.
