Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Prematurity is associated with an increased risk of neuropsychomotor developmental delays, as well as being the leading cause of mortality up to five years of age (Ministry of Health, 2022). Actions should be developed that involve supporting, guiding, and equipping parents or caregivers for the daily care of premature infants (Carvalho et al., 2021). OBJECTIVE: To report an action carried out in the Intermediate Care Unit with the parents and caregivers of premature newborns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the execution of the action, a room was provided, adapted with chairs arranged in a circular format to promote an environment of interaction between professionals and participants. Objects commonly found in the newborn's routine were used, such as disposable diapers, cloth diapers, dolls, and a crib, with the aim of simulating a realistic environment. A literature search was conducted to support the scientific foundation of the action. Additionally, the technical material prepared by the Ministry of Health regarding the Kangaroo Method was consulted. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The action took place on November 28, 2024, with the collaboration of the physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams. Initially, information about the specifics of prematurity was presented. Then, the importance of sleep was addressed, along with the proper technique for changing disposable diapers, demonstrated using a doll. Guidance was given on the proper positioning of the baby for breastfeeding and instructions on adopting the kangaroo position to promote skin-to-skin contact. Finally, parents and caregivers were instructed on the importance of changing the baby’s position (Brazil, 2023). Participants were invited to replicate the demonstrations and ask questions. Undoubtedly, the action enriched professional practice by promoting integration within the multidisciplinary team, fostering interdisciplinarity, resulting in the positive development of the involved professionals, and enhancing communication skills. Therefore, the action proved to be an effective approach to the care of premature newborns, establishing itself as a relevant strategy in health promotion.
