Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a dysfunction of the urinary tract that affects both the male and female reproductive systems. It is characterized by the involuntary loss of urine during physical exertion or by the uncontrollable urge to urinate (Todhunter-Brown et al., 2022). This dysfunction can cause physical, psychological, social, and hygienic damage, negatively impacting and reducing the quality of life (Alves et al., 2022). OBJECTIVE: To narrate the development of an educational material about urinary incontinence for the population during the extracurricular internship. METHODS: During the extracurricular internship, a surgical ward with a high demand for urogynecological surgeries was observed, and it was noted that many patients exhibited symptoms of urinary incontinence with little or no knowledge about the dysfunction. For the creation of the pamphlet, a search of current literature on the topic was conducted. The findings were compiled, and we used photographs of our own authorship, as well as illustrations from a platform, to make the content more engaging and didactic. Additionally, the language was adapted to ensure clarity and accessibility for the readers. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The pamphlet was developed between March and October 2024 by a team consisting of physiotherapists, preceptors, and interns from a physiotherapy course at a reference hospital in the Northern region of Brazil. The Canva tool was used for the creation and formatting of the material, which consists of 16 pages. Furthermore, the content includes a table of contents, followed by didactic explanations about UI, types of dysfunctions, methods of identifying signs and symptoms, prevention strategies, treatment, and finally, demonstrations of exercises that can be performed after hospital discharge, accompanied by images to facilitate applicability. The material was registered with the Brazilian Chamber of Books (ISBN: 978-65-01-21684-3), ensuring its authenticity, and was later made available online on the Zenodo platform with free access. Therefore, the creation of didactic materials on urinary incontinence proves to be an effective strategy for improving quality of life and autonomy, as well as the use of technologies to build informative tools, contributing to health promotion actions.
