Purpose: To evaluate the knowledge of medical students from a public University on the protocol. Methods: Questions asked were relating to communication skills, knowledge of the Spikes protocol and inquiries relating to the protocol itself, being done with students of the 3rd, 4th and 5th medicine year. According to the nature of the variables, the Anova test followed by the Contingency test in C were done. Results: It was found that 73.75% of students claimed ignorance about Spikes. The third year showed more knowledge about the protocol. No student of fourth year claimed to have had contact with the protocol and 18.75% of fifth year showed knowledge of it. Conclusion: The results allow us to infer that UEPA’s third year of medicine was the one that received the most training at the formal education level to date, while the 5th is the one that learned most from the practice. The fourth year is deficient in both aspects, being the year in which none of the interviewees claimed to have knowledge of the Spikes protocol.
